Design Part 1: You, Magic, and Energy

Designing an environment is really about the owner of that environment and how you want to portray YOU. Whether this is a place of business or your personal home, you want that space to reflect you. We all have our likes and dislikes, and it is really about knowing what that is. Some people don’t know until an Interior Designer gets involved and starts asking a bunch of questions that really pull that information out of the individual. Once the information starts pouring out, watch out and let the magic begin.

The MAGIC involved is taking your words and creating the harmony, balance, and a sense of belonging to your space.

If you answer these questions honestly, you will be able to unravel your magical kingdom. Here are some questions that get asked:

  • Do you have a favorite look or style? (Traditional, transitional, contemporary, or maybe a blend of two styles.)
  • How do you function in the space/room?
  • Are there any special needs or requirements?
  • Are you utilizing existing furniture?
  • Do you have color inspiration or branding requirements (for commercial projects)?
  • What colors do you love? What colors do you dislike?
  • What is your budget?

Now, there are more questions that get asked, but this will give you a good start.

Positive ENERGY in your environment is key and I am not talking about you and your thoughts.

A key ingredient for a healthy environment is to select colors that will give your aura a sense of peace. There is a whole psychology behind color and how it can impact us as human beings and the moods we portray. Placement of your furniture has a lot to do with the energy of your space/room. Make sure you don’t place furniture to create an obstacle course. You need to be able to maneuver through a space with convenience and flow.

Natural lighting is another key source of energy. Make sure you have natural light in the spaces/rooms that get used the most: bedrooms, kitchens, family rooms, etc. If you lack natural lighting, then light fixtures are to be added.

Reduce the harmful toxins in your environment by painting your space/rooms with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints, along with choosing less toxic materials for your construction projects. I will be sharing more about toxic environments in my wellness section, so stay tuned!
